Beware of service fees and taxes. Can end up paying twice the cost of train ticket in Japan
The service fees and taxes charged are just as much as the reserved tickets that one could purchase at the train station or the JR website . For us it was double the cost. Apparently, company charges per one way journey per person.the charges were written in small prints. That is the problem when purchasing with local currency. My fault for not paying attention. Should have read the reviews earlier before purchasing.
A Premium Price for No Service
Japan Travel Navitime appears to be the official website for buying the Shinkansen ticket but is not.
The first time I used their services all went to plan.
But on the second occasion, the QR Code did not work when I attempted to print the tickets at the train station.
WIth only 30 mins before my departure time, I needed to purchase new tickets.
When I sought a refund, here is part of their response:
.....Please also note that once the departure time has passed, the QR code will become invalid and can no longer be used.
However, the application ID SH000001708116 is an internal reference number that we provided to the customer for identification purposes within our company. It is not related to the station system. Therefore, the station staff will not be able to locate the ticket using SH000001708116.
We kindly ask customers to contact us before the departure time so that we can provide timely assistance. However, as you contacted us three days after your departure date, we regret to inform you that we are unable to provide further assistance or issue any refund for these tickets.
Regardless of whether the tickets have been used or not, Japan Railway charges the full amount for issued tickets, and no changes or refunds can be made once the tickets have been finalized.......
Book your tickets directly with the train company.
Semi convenient at a steep premium
The Japanese rail system is already confusing due to being split across so many companies, and because most of them don’t advertise on Google, this service steps in as a convenient one‑stop shop always on top in your search results.
While it is easy to buy nearly all train tickets in one place, the convenience comes with a steep markup—about 20% more than booking directly on JR’s website—plus an additional “foreign” tax, even though we are Japan residents.
There’s no option to add an IC card, and “free cancellation” isn’t actually offered, not even within 30 minutes of booking a trip 22 days in advance.
On top of that, they send unsolicited emails pushing additional eSIM purchases, which feels quite unpleasant.
Everything technically worked and we received our QR codes immediately, but I would much rather book directly through JR. In this case, doing so would have saved us ¥14,000 on just four tickets.
Avoid avoid avoid
We didn’t realise that Japan Travel Navitime wasn’t the official website for buying the Shinkansen stickers (our mistake we got suckered by them being out the top of the google page and having official in there title). We noticed when we realised that one of our Shinkansen tickets was was more expensive then it should’ve been. After looking at it properly they weren’t the official retailers they were paying for sponsored spaces on google and putting “official” to make themselves seem like they were. I actually didn’t have too much of an issue with the first 2 tickets we purchased as they weren’t too expensive and it was an easy process to purchase them (however we also couldn’t pick out seats). The thing I do have an issue with is being charged a 241% “fee and tax” on a ticket. The company is an absolute scam and should be avoided at all costs.
Zero service for huge markup
This company allows you to buy Shinkansen tickets before they go on sale in Japan. I mistakenly thought they would find me seats so I wouldn't have to deal with a complicate route during the busy new year's period when reservations get sold out. Nope. They didn't get it done in time, didn't let me know, and I had to rebook it myself. Still charged me a huge markup on the tickets though.
Way overpriced
Way overpriced. Like almost double the price of official JR-line prices.
If i could give 0 i would
If i could give 0 i would. It’s a straight scam. They essentially deceive people into booking train tickets with them. They are an official reseller so you will get your ticket but at 50% more cost. It’s pointless. The only reason people buy from them is because it seems like you’re buying from the real train site. Trust me just buy your ticket at the train station. It doesn’t sell out barely ever and you know you’re getting the real thing that way. Straight up scam company. Fraud. Terrible people. Terrible company. Modern day scam.
Worst experience i ever had
Worst experience i ever had. We booked an ticket online and could’nt redeem it because their website Were Down. Now they won’t even answer me when i mail Them. Dont buy anything from here!
Charged 2x price for shinkansen tickets
Charged 2.2x the actual cost of the tickets. Shows charges as handling fees but why would you charge handling fees more than the price of a ticket?
I just bought the JR Narita Express
I just bought the JR Narita Express, they charged me more than the double of the ticket cost, thought it was an error and wrote them, they answered that’s not an error, is our commission. How can this scam company be allowed to continue it’s business? Reading the other reviews, many tourists have been scammed this way, if Japan is a law respecting country, why nobody intervenes? I will never trust Japanese people again.
SCAM website
SCAM! For all travellers, please avoid this website at all costs! Go directly to the company official website as they charge almost double to the original ticket.
For a one hour journey, we ended up paying 12000yen instead of 7000. Also, the train we boarded was for unreserved seats whereas their website only shows reserved seats.
Avoid this website
Avoid this website. They charge 30%admin fee without even mentioning it. When you complain they say you have agreed to terms and conditions. Unfortunately they are taking advantage of tourists in Japan and I wish someone could stop them. I blame the horrible officials website for this.
Scammers! Beware!
Scammers charge you approx 40% more for tickets and then refuse to refund you when the train is cancelled!
The tickets are 50% more expensive on…
The tickets are 50% more expensive on this site than at the station BE AWARE!
The worst travel app in Japan
The worst travel app in Japan. The tickets that I bought could not be issued at the station of departure, despite navitime claiming that tickets can be issued there. There is no mechanism for claiming a refund or file a complaint. Effectively this meant that I had to buy new tickets from the station. I then realised that navitime charged almost double the actual ticket price.
Double check your ticket as they provided me with the wrong one.
I don’t usually like to write bad reviews, but my morning was a bit of a nightmare because of this company. I booked a train ticket from Osaka to Tokyo, waited for the QR code, and headed to the station to collect the paper ticket. After I scanned the QR code, I received four different tickets, which seemed odd already. Furthermore, the times on the tickets were different from the one for the train I had booked. I showed the ticket to the station staff lady, and she looked confused. She explained that the ticket I received was for Kyoto to Nara. I asked her to help sort it out, and after a bit of digging, she stated that unfortunately she could not change it as it had been booked via a third party (Japan Travel).
As I have an eSIM and could not call the agency, I kindly asked her to call them on my behalf, which she did. After the phone conversation, I was informed that the mistake was due to a system failure. I had to pay a 3100 yen fee to change my ticket (which Japan Travel has now refunded); however, because of this delay, I missed my train and had to catch the one after. I am extremely grateful to the wonderful station staff lady, as without her I would not have been able to sort this problem.
Don't buy your train tickets from them
Don't buy your train tickets from them; their website buffers. I didn't receive 2 QR codes. One train ticket's issue date was passed, and there was no refund. I cannot get a refund for the second ticket as I am in Takayama, and the refund has to be at JR East, not Central.
Stood in the counter line to be told no refund, went and stood in line for the Ticket machine, to not be able to extract a ticket with a QR code.
What fraud? I was on their chat for over three hours. I read multiple Reddit threads on this QR code scam.
EDIT - The last response was they stopped chatting with me, and I now have a bill from them on my CC for AUD 600.
Tell me you are a scam without telling me you are a scam.
