Hi Oliver,
Sorry to hear you had difficulty with the system.
The name & D.O.B validate against the licence number entered, as the first part of the licence number is the surname, the numbers are the date of birth then the characters immediately after that are the forename/middle name.
Initially you missed out your middle name so the licence could not be validated.
Once you entered your middle name the system was able to validate the details, enabling you to purchase the policy.

Hasn't fully thought through person buying the insurance being parent to the insured
I had to go away to find out the car insurance policy number and it was able to pick up even though it had been left for over an hour while waiting for my husband to come out of a meeting.
I've bought this for my son - he is at uni so will hopefully be driving on his return. Car belongs to my husband but I'm also a named driver on the insurance. I'm getting the insurance from a link you sent my so after he used your product over the summer, so it has some details in but very few and nowhere in the process did it ask for my details which I would have expected as I was paying! It would have been good to have had to put my details in 1 - to get a receipt and to see that the payment went through correctly, and 2 - to ensure that when the cover runs out after this holiday, I am warned and that there's a link to buy another similar policy should it be needed (hopefully not for this son!) But for younger child and for other friends that might need similar cover.
Plus it would be nice to be able to print out the policy to put in the car. It's also not clear if the policy covers a specific person supervising (eg my husband, the owner of the car) or more than one (either me, wife/mother and registered insured on the car, or another person given permission to drive and/or supervise my son in the car...).

We understand that you had some concerns about the purchasing process, particularly about the need for your husband's car insurance policy number. We apologise for any inconvenience this caused. As you noted, the policy number is required to verify that the insured vehicle is covered by appropriate insurance.
Regarding your point about your details not being requested, we would like to clarify that we only require the details of the person we are insuring, in this case, your son. The payment information is solely for us to process the transaction and issue the insurance policy.
With regards to receiving a receipt and policy documents via email; we currently do this as our standard practice, and you should receive the documents shortly after completing the purchase. If you wish to print these documents out for a physical copy to keep in the vehicle, you are welcome to do so.
Regarding your question about who can supervise, details of who can supervise are advised & confirmed when applying, and also stated within the policy documents. The accompanying driver does not need to be named on the policy; the supervising driver must be a UK resident with a valid driving licence and at least three years of driving experience - although you can always check the policy terms and conditions if you are unsure.
