Claire Austin Hardy Plants is a specialist mail order plant nursery that's built it's reputation on supplying quality hardy perennials. Decades of hands-on growing experience, propagating, trialing, testing and tending to plants has resulted in the knowledge that every plant we offer is worthy of it's place in the garden. We hold Plant Heritage National Collections of hybrid herbaceous peonies and bearded irises and have received numerous medals and awards at shows including gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The National Collections include hundreds of irises and peonies, including unusual varieties not commonly found in local garden centers or at other nurseries. Excellent plants received
Excellent plants received, They were delivered by Royal Mail 24 hr so arrived in great condition. They came on time, and to my house as it was Royal Mail. Ordered Geranium phaeum and Geum. All well rooted, packed very well. Couldn't be more pleased.

Exceptional quality. Plants arrived well packaged and unharmed every time.
Obviously they require planting out correctly, and nurturing for the first month or so, but they are all thriving, and I believe this comes from the nursery you buy from. Clearly they know how to supply quality plants.
All individual orders were over 130 quid. Zero issue with any plant. Fantastic.

Where to start...simple
Where to start...simple, just go to her website and start filling the shopping basket. Never having shopped before, i knew i was in safe hands due to the pedigree which runs in the family, namely, the world famous rose breeder. There is a great selection of plants to choose from, wonderfully priced and upon very safe arrival of my precious hardy geraniums saw that attention to detail is high on the list. Each 9cm pot plant was much bigger than i had first expected, some even had flowers on. Each very securely wrapped and nothing broken or sloshed about, unlike some other bigger online shops i could mention, where all you receive is a twig and a leaf. So, yes i would say you get great value for money, the website is simple and easy to use as was checkout. Ordered on the monday and was planting them the friday of the same week. My only little gripe, would be to have some more information about each plant and recommend more companion plants, so to build a garden full of colour as easy as possible. E.g. as youve added this to the basket, why not add these for a wonderful display of year long interest, just a thought. Though that could be very dangerous for my wallet. Thank you.

Good healthy plants
Recently received 2 orders from Claire Austin plants all hardy perennials. Both arrived quickly and well packed to prevent any damage to the plants. The plants themselves were healthy. I repotted them into bigger pots to grow on before I plant them out into the garden later this spring or early summer however they can be planted out straight away. There is an excellent choice of plants.

I have bought David Austin roses for…
I have bought David Austin roses for many years with great success so last year when I wanted some perennials I turned to Claire Austin. Spurred on by great reviews I went ahead and ordered.
I ordered the cottage garden bundle, 6 ornamental grasses and a black eyed susan. Now some of them didn't look too good when they arrived, but the website did say don't worry if they look dead they will be fine.
I wasn't expecting at lot in the first year and some grew more than others. The black eyed susan did particularly welI with a lot of beautiful blooms. I looked after them as per online instructions.
However as the garden starts to wake up, 3 of the cottage garden bundle are dead, 2 look like they are going the same way. 3 of the grasses are not good either. Black eyed susan is also dead, so disappointed. In complete contrast the others are strong and healthy. Very disappointed considering the price.

Nice friendly and helpful website, offering plants that are grown outdoors so are always strong compared to some of the cosseted plants you can buy from the garden centres! Very happy with all the plants I…
Very happy with all the plants I received. They may not look much at the moment (March), but new growth is evident and all seem to be doing well in their allocated places. Good variety of plants and they arrived well packaged, not to mention good size too. All around a good experience.

We were sorry to hear you believe two of the plants in your order died after having survived the winter on our stock beds and having been sent out as live plants with healthy roots. We state in our planting instructions that plants should not be left in heated glasshouses as this can soften growth and make the plant more susceptible to weather when placed outside as well as increasing the likelihood of under watering of moisture loving plants such as the ones you ordered.
We hope your experience does not detract from the continual learning, enjoyable experimentation and pleasure that gardening can offer and which we have enjoyed over the decades.

Did not expect such a bad quality
Did not expect such a bad quality from Claire Austin. 3 peony roots have been ordered, 2 came very small (very little dry roots approximately 6 cm) one of them Pastelegance for 125£. I could not believe my eyes when I opened the box. I’ve ordered peonies before from Dutch online shops in UK and they were much better and cheaper.

We were sorry to hear of your disappointment especially in relation to Peony 'Pastelelegance' which is a hard to come by and special peony. Peony roots vary in size by type and variety. The size of the roots supplied to you is, in our opinion as commercial growers for decades, in line with seasonal expectations.
It is unfortunate that you did not choose to return the peonies to us for a refund as offered. We didn't feel asking for the return of the order prior to issuing a refund was unreasonable when the value of the plants and rarity of varieties supplied was taken in to consideration. Peony collectors that had missed out on securing a Pastelegance due to the limited availability would have been delighted to receive your returned plant.
We hope the peonies have now been planted and will thrive, putting to rest your concerns as to the size and vigour of the healthy roots supplied . As a British, family owned nursery, peony lovers and holders of a Plant Heritage National Collection of hybrid herbaceous peonies we are saddened to hear your expectations weren't met. We hope that peonies form a part of the great enjoyment that can be derived from your garden in future.
