The process was probably made easier for me because I was a bookkeeper/accountant for small businesses before I started my own business. I've been in business for a few years, so I have a viable business, and I knew exactly what I needed the start-up loan for.

You are given a 4-in-1 document with guidance on how to complete each section. It's simple. Don't make it difficult for yourself.

My personal suggestion for applicants who have not started trading: You need to have worked out what everything will cost, what exactly you're selling, who your customers are, who your competitors are, and a rough cash flow for the first year of business.

For applicants that are already trading: You need to know your business, know the numbers and your customers, and know what you're asking for and why. You, too, need to be able to project cash flow for the year.

Go into the process knowing what you want/need and why, and the team at BizBritain will guide you through the application process clearly and swiftly.

If you're new to business, of course, it's going to be daunting, even a little stressful; it's all a learning curve. If you can't keep your cool and stay kind during a loan application, then starting and running your own business probably won't be a productive or successful experience for you.

It's not a process that's going to happen overnight. Give yourself a few weeks or a month or so. Learn quickly that in business, nothing is going to go as fast as you'd like it to. The team guide you through a loan application; they aren't business advisors, they aren't going to be on call 24/7 to answer unrelated questions or help you build a business plan from scratch, like starting a business and applying for a start-up loan was something you decided to do on a whim and thought someone else would do the work for you.

For what they are paid per application (you don't pay them anything; they make money acting as the credit intermediary, so it is essentially free for you), the level of service is top-notch.

Having worked with small businesses for years, I know you'd have to fork out a whole lot of money to get a comparable service. But you aren't paying anything for their help; it's free!

My application journey was clear and quick with Karen. i consistently received clear instructions and this meant the process went quickly and smoothly. Just be prepared to receive phone calls at any time not necessarily with notice.

The only less positive thing i would highlight is an aspect of the automated emails from bizbritain. Whilst the application is being reviewed it is left unlocked, but this meant i was getting constant and at times confusing reminders about steps of the application.
