Puts Profit Over People and Their Loved Ones
My dog recently passed away. She was 13 years old, and over the course of her entire life, I took her to Banfield Pet Hospital for her basic medical needs.
As you can most likely see, I am giving the company a 1 out of 5 stars rating, so you may be wondering why I stayed a costumer of theirs for over a decade if I was dissatisfied with their care. Let me explain.
When initially choosing a veterinarian for my dog, I decided to go with Banfield Pet Hospital because I had heard a couple of favorable reviews on them, the staff seemed friendly enough, and I felt like their Optimum Wellness Plan fit my financial situation as it provided me a discounted rate on their services. When I first signed up for the plan, I specifically remember being told that it was a monthly-based payment, and that I was free to cancel at any time.
For the majority of my dog’s life, she was in good health, so during that time period, I mainly only needed to bring her into Banfield for her yearly comprehensive exams, her needed shots, her needed parasite control, and her dental cleaning.
Towards the last few years of her life, her health slightly declined and she needed a little more medical attention than before. It seemed like the veterinarians and their technicians were less knowledgeable on more complex medical issues, but I still felt like their basic care services were sufficient, so I continued to bring my dog there.
I did not fully comprehend at the time just how influentially connected some of her minor health concerns were to some of her more major ones. I, unfortunately, would not realize that until about a week before her passing where I was told by several staff members at my local Banfield that they could not perform a specific test on her because she was not in a stable enough condition to get an accurate reading. They rescheduled her for the following week to see if she became stable enough to perform the test. Two days later, her condition did not improve, so I decided to take her to a credible emergency veterinary hospital. When I was explaining the situation to them, I was told by three separate veterinarians that the staff over at Banfield should have, in fact, performed that test on her, even with the state she was in, because while it would not be able to give an accurate reading for her base line, it could still show whether or not she was in a dangerous zone. As you could most likely guess, she was in that danger zone.
While I still feel greatly disheartened by that misinformation, that was not the cause of her passing. With her age and her medical history, it was simply her time. So, with all of that being taken into consideration, if you had asked me even just a few days ago what I thought about Banfield, I would have told you that while I did not feel like they were capable of medical needs that went beyond basic care, I was mostly satisfied with the care they could give. For that, I reward them a single star, but they lost their remaining stars from me a couple of days ago when I had to deal with their billing services.
I went online to their website to cancel my Optimum Wellness Plan. I saw that I was able to turn off the auto-renew feature for the following year, but if I needed to cancel the entire plan, I would have to call their customer service. I think it goes without saying that I was fairly confused about what the difference between the two options were, and why I had to call to cancel instead of just being able to cancel online. So, I called that number, and I was told by them that the maximum price coverage limit that I had on my plan was not completely used when receiving their services. They said I still had a remaining/available balance of almost $700.00, and since that it was never used, and can obviously no longer be used, that I have to pay for the remaining amount. I was told that I could pay it all off now or I could continue making monthly payments for the next year until it is completely paid. I do not have $700.00 to spare, as I am sure most other people do not as well, so, for the next year, I will be paying for something that I can no longer use.
Over the entire 13 years that I was a customer of theirs, none of that was ever coherently or accurately explained to me. Also, in my opinion, what is especially mind-boggling about this is the fact that most of the medical services that my dog received was not completely covered by the plan. Most of the time, there was a certain amount that I had to pay out of pocket and it usually was not a small fee—It was just small compared to the overall amount of the bill.
I feel like this was incredibly misleading. This is one of the most heartbreaking experiences I have ever gone through, and I feel like Banfield capitalized off of my grief.
If you have an animal companion, and you are looking for a veterinarian, I would not recommend Banfield Pet Hospital.
Banfield Eldridge Pkwy Houston TX
This was by far my WORSE experience ever with a vet. I own a sphinx cat, sweet as can be to everyone he meets. He has traveled crossed the US doing meet and greets with thousands of people. He goes in for ringworm on his eye and his shots at 7 in the morning. I get a call @ 3 in the afternoon saying nothing about is eye but a "Scab" on his neck, a ear infection and they tell me he is aggressive. ALSO that I have to pay extra for the skin swab on his neck, completely ignoring his eye. I signed up for their pet care plus to have that included. I tell them that I'll pick him up in 30 minutes and be on our way. I come up there and see they have him in the back and the "scab" in question is a bruise they left on his neck from holding him down to clean his ears. I went to a second vet for another opinion, and they confirmed it was a bruise. It's vile that they have the gal to not only injure my cat but charge me for it as well with their predatory pet care plan. I have sent this into my local news outlets, and I will keep in touch about this matter. This was uncalled for and extremely unprofessional.
Great vets and techs, good customer service
I think location probably makes a big difference. Even just local vets tend to have very inconsistent reviews. I'm in Pensacola FL and our Banfield vet has been fabulous. Every vet and tech we've seen has been awesome. My shih tzu has bad allergies and they treat him well. I really recommend their pet programs because it can save you a lot of money. We had to have one of our pets euthanized a few years ago and they were great then too, very respectful of our wishes. I've had my dog's teeth cleaned there, and everything went smoothly. I haven't had any problems getting an appointment when I need it. The only issue I e had is that their app has some glitches.
BANFIELD DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU OR YOUR PET
I wrote a bad review, they responded with a generic write to your email and we will discuss...I STILL have not heard from anyone! Banfield truly doesn't care about the owners! This has opened my eyes about Banfield and I will continue to spread the word with daily bad reviews adding in that the corporate office doesn't even respond. Don't waste your time writing to "BanfieldCARES"
You guys are absolutely terrible!
Disappointed
Disappointed! Received an email stating my dog was behind on vaccines. Made appointment only to get there and have one vaccine needed. Left my appointment today as I was given sample pain medication for my dog and get charged for samples. The girl at the desk went to charge me only to tell me she had no idea what the charges were for! Come on seriously! When I called to inquire I was told her way of saying samples is a dry run for 2 weeks then return to pay for blood work. Possibly one should advise the patient of cost of drug instead of offering samples
I just had the WORST experience I have…
I just had the WORST experience I have ever had with a vet clinic at your Kingwood facility located at 4521 Kingwood Drive. On June 2, 2026 I noticed my little dog's ear was swollen and somewhat firm. I got online to make an appointment at your Kingwood location as my dog's usual vet is in downtown Houston and not available. I made the appointment for 5:00 pm. I showed up on time and with my pet's records (on my phone) and I was told their "system was down" and my pet could not be seen. I was asked if I could "drop him off in the morning." I said I was not sure if it was an emergency and that I couldn't really come back in the morning.
I then asked why the vet could not see my dog without the computer working, as this did not make any sense. She said she could not pull up procedures or prices. Is there not a system in place at Banfield where vets can see sick or injured animals and then call in to corporate for prices or bill the next day? The woman behind the counter talking to me was clearly frustrated and got very annoyed with me and I told her I just did not understand her poor attitude. My dog is clearly injured or sick and he needed help. She said the doctor was on the phone and I could just wait to talk to her, but there was nothing she could do. I told her when I am at work and my computers are down or the internet is not working, I can still take care of my clients. If your system is so sensitive that sick or injured pets cannot be seen with a "down system", you all need a new system for emergencies or you should not be in the pet health business.
That counter clerk was so rude, unsympathetic, and uncaring that I just left to find a new after-hours vet/hospital. I will never go back to nor recommend a Banfield clinic nor the vet at that clinic. That location and the staff should not be in the pet healthcare business.
I did call the 800 number for Banfield customer service and the gentleman who answered the phone and talked to me about my experience was very kind and understanding and he was amazing. That man deserves a raise and a promotion, but the entire Kingwood staff should be fired.
Horrible place to take your pet
Horrible place to take your pet. They can't even keep up when my dogs shots are due. I get it to show that they're due, and then when I go there, they tell me they're not due. Also my dogs first teeth cleaning I was told that he DIED under anastasia . I was told that they would use a different anesthesia. The next time. When I took him back again for his teeth, cleaning, I was concerned about him DYING can they tell me that he didn't die with another issue. There's all these different things going on.In my life, when they gave him this anesthesia this time, he had issue that im still don't quite understand ,something about his heart rate dropped and they had to give him some medication. I canceled my the dental plans, but they kept insisting that I need to bring him back again for a dental cleaning. I ended up canceling the whole insurance after they were couldn't kerp up with his vaccination
Horrible subscription
Appointments are available for drop offs only on MOORESVILLE NC, if you need in person appointments you have to call 5-10 business days to see if a doctor is available. Do this sounds right to any one? I don’t think so plus you call the Banfield phone number 8668947927 to cancel the subscription and get a refund they declined it. This subscription is not a good business practice they are horrible.
I used to recommend this place to…
I used to recommend this place to everyone ( I’ve been a customer over 20 yrs ) now they just want money money money !!!! The vets care but the policies don’t allow for that unless your checkbook is open . This has been getting worse for a couple years now but recently my dog had a rather serious eye injury and was seen after all the up charges for tests and scripts ( I had a wellness plan with them ) he was sent home. The next day he got a lot worse and it actually scared me . When I called to have him seen again I was told the next appt was almost 7 days away and to take him to the ER. When I mentioned the plan I was told it wasn’t insurance and basically told to bug off . The plan would cover the visit so I wasn't allowed to use what I’m paying for . He’s fine now because of a specialist . Today I went to get him an allergy shot and was turned away because they say his account is in collections, they just took the final payment for the year out 2 weeks ago !!! I turned off auto renew and found another vet so I guess that’s money they won’t get so they just cut you off!!! If your looking for pet insurance don’t go here !!!!! Get a pet insurance policy with a wellness clause, it’s the same amount of money and you get reimbursed and you can go anywhere!
Very disappointing experience at…
Very disappointing experience at Banfield on Coral Way in Miami. After more than 5 years as loyal customers, we were treated with disrespect and unprofessionalism. An employee named Vannessa refused to provide her last name and was extremely dismissive. It felt like the focus was more on selling unnecessary services than actually caring about pets and customers.
We left frustrated and upset. Because of this experience, I’m canceling my wellness plan and will not be returning.
Not worth it. Save yourself money and use mobile vets
I have been with them for year and can tell for sure - Not worth it - and they will send you to collections if you stop paying and can’t afford. If they prorate they use ridiculous pricing for comparison. They sent me to collections for 499 after I stopped paying in 6-7 months for one of my dogs because the plan went up from 30-40 to 60 and couldn’t afford it. All she had is few basic vaccines and a bloodwork. They also said she had fecal and they haven’t, I still have the empty containers.
I just paid a Mobile vet $164 per dog for all vaccines - dapp, rabbies, Lepto, bordatella, including internal parasite and heart warm test, bloodwork and fecal. If I had the plan I would pay 12 x 60 =720 for the year ( not even getting fecal and urine although they charge), not to mention sometimes they give one of my dogs diarrhea which cost me about 100 for probiotics after the shots.
Dr. at Banfield Stockton lied about my frenchie's breathing in an attempt to get her spayed
I took my 5mo frenchie Xochie in because her umbilical hernia appeared bigger. Dr. Wright called me and told me that my frenchies nostrils were completely closed. That she was not able to breathe through her nose at all. That i needed to have her spayed because no one would do a BOAS surgery without her being spayed. Dr. Wright also implied that no doctor would perform her hernia repair or tooth extraction without her being spayed. I told them that my I planned to breed Xochi when she was old enough. They told me how it was unethical to breed her because of her closed nostrils. When I picked up Xochi I watched and heard her sniffing everything. I called and requested that Dr. Wright call me back. I asked the doctor why Xochi was sniffing and breathing fine if her nostrils were completely closed. They apologized if they made it sound like she could not breathe at all. They said the flat muzzle and pinched nostrils is a breeding defect and no responsible person would breed their dog with those traits. I pointed out that was something that frenchies are known for and they said yes it was irresponsible unethical breeding. I told them that it seemed like they were more concerned with having her spayed than assisting me with getting the proper care. I told them that I did not get Xochi from a puppy mill. I got her from a responsible breeder and that banfield ran a health screen and told me there was nothing genetic that should prevent her from breeding. This is not what I needed to hear from a vet when I'm concerned about a hernia. I said I wasn't spaying her. That should have been the end of that conversation. I should not have been preached to by this person. Great I get it they dont believe in breeding Frenchies. Then they shouldn't breed Frenchies. The entire experience was very upsetting to me. I am paying for a rather over priced plan for two dogs when that already had insurance because I thought banfield was good for basic care. I do not want Dr. Wright touching either of my dogs IF I decide to bring them in again. I will be contacting the corporate office as well as leaving a trust pilot review.

The “pet insurance plans are a scam- I paid for 2 yrs took the cats once for shots etc. they charged me over $ 500 I waited 3 hrs and the company charged me $71 for each pet to cancel the policy
Worst pet care provider company ever
Run in the opposite direction
15 year customer
I have been taking my 15 year old chihuahua to the same location since a puppy and I refuse to change the location even when we moved. The women in our location are friendly, answer all my questions and are overall helpful. The two doctors are also very good at explaining treatment plans as well as suggestions if plan a isnt an option budget wise.
When my dog fell down the stairs and lost the ability to walk, they were quick to reasure me that even if they could only do so much, there were places we could take her. They gave out a list of recommended places for spin issues and it turned out little Luna learned to walk again
Do NOT bring your animals here
I adopted an elderly cat from my local shelter and wanted to get him established with a vet. I decided in Banfield because they had wellness plans for senior pets. I signed up for it and took him. Well he ended up being very sick and in the end I had to help my sweet boy cross the rainbow bridge. He went there a total of 3 times. The only services included in the plan were his office visits and one set of X-rays he had. The rest I PAID for. I did get a discount on the meds and his euthanasia but I still paid well over $100 for both things. When I messaged them to cancel they said that I had used over $900 in services and had to pay the remaining $700 and something after my payments had come out. I was not happy. They “discounted” it down to $400 and something. I’m sorry but there is NO way for 3 visits it cost over $900 when they barely did anything. So not only did I lose my beloved cat, now I get to be reminded every month when my payments come out. Mind you he passed before the second payment even came out. Do NOT bring your animals here. All they care about is money.
Please don't trust this company for your pet's care.
I hope and pray someone else sees this and decides to take their pet to another location. If this grotesque behavior is being covered up, lord knows what else is.
We had a major issue with the office manager at the Hutto, TX location.
They were understaffed and she was handling the work of a vet tech, so I am told.
My dog Jax and I were in a room one on one, and she flat out wouldn't let me leave. She kept asking if we wanted additional shots and services not covered in the wellness plan that also weren't regularly scheduled. I understand hitting numbers, but this was flat out being held without consent.
After being harassed with fear mongering about how sick my dog will get 5 or 6 times after saying no, I had to ask if calling the authorities will get me out of there.
Needless to say, a WILD experience. Horrendous salesmanship but more importantly, if this is happening to me it's happening to others and it's disgusting. When I was able to leave, I asked the front desk if we can cancel the plan we just signed up for and was told I cannot (which was a lie. It was within 4 days).
I spoke with a Dr. Kelly for an hour+ and she did everything she could to take accountability for the god-awful experience and stated she will work with her team and this person so that never happens again.
Fast forward some months and sure enough that same office manager put notes in our account about me being aggressive and they would only talk to my spouse about the dog. No notes left about the office managers actions whatsoever. The gas lighting to cover it all up is nuts!
I was contacted on 4/28 by a Dr. Toni Franken after submitting what had happened to corporate. She was polite but completely biased and only interested in looking out for the company not the customer who was badgered, harassed, and ridiculed.
From BAD to Pretty Good
I have to stop and write a good review. The Banfield in Valley Stream, NY used to SUCK. No one answering the phone when you call, extremely hard to get an appointment. If you were early, you were made to wait like a petulant child as if being early was a fault. BUT, they have done almost a complete 300. Yes, not completely 360, but I was impressed. I had to come back for an appointment that could have been done when I was there 2 weeks before, and I have to go back because no one mentioned the fecal exam. No worries, I got the tube and will plan on bringing in the poop when I am back on that side of town. I travel an hour because I love the Drs there (even though the last 2 times they were not on point as they usually are). I will continue to drive the hour and I love the improvements. Get to the 360 folks! :)
Be prepared for a hard sell for an expensive annual treatment plan.
Went in for a couple of immunizations for our cat that were due, and got a very hard sell on signing up for an expensive annual treatment plan that I considered to be "over the top".
Unethical unnecessary testing to bill more
My dog had started urinating indoors. Healthy dog otherwise. I wanted to know if it was medically related or behavioral. Took him in to get a urinalysis to rule out the medical cause. I was told by the vet that he had a high PH but otherwise his urine was normal, no infection. The vet then suggested I get bloodwork and X-Rays.
When asked why she responded to rule out diabetes or thyroid. I could rule out thyroid because he is extremely active and has a normal appetite. I was puzzled by the diabetes testing because his glucose levels in the urinalysis were normal. They were just trying unnecessary tests to rack up the bill. I refused.
Just to educate myself I researched high PH in dog urine. There is a study by the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School that shows canine PH urine levels peak between 9-11am. Why, the dog has been sleeping overnight and consumed less water. The vet should know this, I took him in at 9:30am!
Customer Service working with me.
I called in December to cancel my dogs membership and was told I couldn't cancel or even schedule a cancellation until March so I'd have to keep paying until at least then but I would have to call back to complete the actual cancellation. I called back today April 13th. I was told my membership is a year long and can't be cancelled until June. BUT because of the notes written from the 1st call back in Dec 2025 they honored what I was told and cancelled it today. I was stunned and pleasantly surprised. I felt it was fair even if the first guy gave me bad info, the stipulations are the stipulations so I really appreciated that they honored their own customer service reps incorrect guidance/instructions to me back in Dec.
