Maui Motorhome Rentals - Christchurch Omdömen 

We rented a 6 berth Maui campervan from Christchurch for two weeks in winter with 4 adults. This was not our first time with Maui, and we would happily rent from them again.

Booking through the Maui website was straightforward, with easy comparison of vehicles and prices. Pre arrival instructions and online pre check in were also clear.

We received a newer vehicle, under 2.5 years old. Overall condition was very good. There were some exterior battle scars, as expected with rental vehicles, but the interior and kitchen equipment were clean. Pickup was smooth, with friendly staff who took us through the vehicle. The airport transfer was also straightforward.

For 4 adults, we definitely recommend the 6 berth. It was comfortable without being cramped, although not particularly spacious. We used the centre berth as our dining area and the rear and upper berths for sleeping. The mattresses were comfortable, and the linen package included towels, bedsheets, comforters and blankets. We also brought sleeping bags for extra warmth.

The upper berth has very limited headroom, so you cannot sit upright. A ladder is provided, although hooking it up partly blocks the entrance and access to the front cabin. Curtains around the vehicle provide good privacy.

Storage is the biggest limitation. Do not bring large suitcases. 26 inch luggage is about the practical maximum, with two or possibly three pieces fitting under the centre table. The rear external compartment is mainly occupied by the chairs, table, snow chains, pipes and power cable.

The kitchen is well equipped with plates, bowls, cups, mugs and utensils. The fridge is small with a tiny freezer compartment, but was sufficient for around 2 kg of ice and roughly two days of food. The gas stove and sink are easy to use, while hot water takes some time to heat up.

For winter, the onboard diesel heater was very useful and does not consume much diesel overnight. The portable heater only works when connected to external power. We stayed on powered sites most nights and had no condensation issues. Snow chains were provided but not needed.

The 7.7 metre vehicle can be challenging if you are unfamiliar with large vehicles. The longer wheelbase also means a wider turning circle. The reversing camera helps, but having someone on the ground to guide you is recommended when manoeuvring in tight spaces. Parking in larger towns can also be difficult.

There is cruise control with a proximity sensor. Note that the authorised speed is 90 km/h, so be prepared to keep left and allow faster traffic to pass when safe and legal. The onboard GPS is usable but not the most updated, so we supplemented it with Google Maps.

Fuel economy was around 15 L/100 km. We travelled about 2,200 km and spent around NZ$500 on diesel, with prices ranging from NZ$2.20 to NZ$2.80 per litre depending on location. Self service stations are common and easy to use. There is also a separate road user charge of around NZ$9 per 100 km.

Campsites were easy to access, with straightforward power connections and clearly marked water, grey water and dumping facilities.

We took the Platinum Pack for $0 excess insurance and felt it was worthwhile for peace of mind. Our windscreen suffered a small crack, likely from stones thrown up by a heavy vehicle ahead. The pack also included portable chairs and a table. Note that Linen Drop and Go is only available after day 7 and requires prior arrangement.

Return was quick and seamless, with a straightforward inspection. There are large rubbish bins and shelves for departing travellers to leave usable items such as detergent, rubbish bags and leftover food.

We paid around NZ$4,400 for two weeks, excluding fuel and road user charges, and felt it was very good value. The 6 berth is a great choice for 4 adults. The main considerations are the vehicle size, limited luggage storage and upper berth headroom.

We would rent from Maui again. Although we may be getting a little too old for that upper berth!

It was the worst campervan experience that we have had! All of the major windows in the camper leaked and one of the food vents also which meant that our beds got wet. The passenger door swung open multiple times whilst driving with our kids in the back, the bathroom door fell off, the fridge shelves broke and the grey water tank was full and blocked! They had the opportunity to change our camper in queenstown but told us they had’fixed the issues’. The van then leaked worse than ever and the whole family got sick from being so cold. They told us over the phone that we could upgrade to cabins and that we would be reimbursed at the end of our trip when we got back to Christchurch only to find out that they never put it in the system and we are still waiting on the reimbursement even after providing all of the paperwork!
Will never hire from or recommend this company again!!

Hired a Maui Ultima in the South Island. Raised the rear tyres at pickup; a technician measured them and said they were fine. Days later at Lake Tekapo, on a clear snow-free day, the van couldn't reverse out of a flat carpark and needed a push to get up a gentle slope — while other motorhomes came and went without issue. We cancelled Hooker Valley and drove to Queenstown, where the branch said they were fully booked, then replaced both rear tyres on the spot.

thl's own figures don't hold up: 3.5mm and 3.8mm at pickup on 7 July, 2.7mm and barely 3mm five days later. Tyres don't lose almost 1mm in five days of ordinary touring. Either the pickup measurement was wrong or the tyres were under their stated 3mm minimum before we ever drove away. Their branch replacing both on the spot suggests which.

Wouldn't hire again.

We absolutely love it and our kids enjoy it too. It’s incredibly convenient and easy to drive. The staff was incredibly kind and friendly. We had a wonderful holiday.

This is a great way to travel New Zealand. With so much to see, having the option to stay at any location along the way without a powered site is awsome. I will be doing this again at some stage.

Hiring a motorhome with Maui was a mostly positive experience. However, be wary about their airport shuttle service. When we picked up the motorhome, we said that we had an early flight and would need to be at the airport fairly quickly after drop off. The staff assured us that they would accomodate us and we were there as promised when their doors opened at 8am. We were seriously let down when we dropped it off because it turned out that no, they couldn't get us to the airport on time for our flight as the shuttle only leaves once on the hour. What would have helped matters is if they perhaps helped us arrange a taxi or something but no, we were left to fend for ourselves. The attendant claimed no knowledge of the previous arrangement / assurance that they'd help get us there on time. It was a very sour and stressful end to what was a fantastic first experience hiring a motorhome.

Great experience, almost everything was as expected.

What we had trouble with was the condition of the snow chains when we had to put them on to get out of the parking spot. It was totally rusty and the grooves of the locking mechanism was full or rust that we might have had to use a drill to fix it up. So we could not get out in time and we had to spend an extra day at the site. Extra cost and waste of a day of holiday.

I hope they had checked its condition prior to loading it. Even during the pre vehicle check the staff member casually just mentioned the snow chains. We should have opened it up and checked the condition.

Vehicle was near new, clean, easy to drive and comfortable. Initial walk around was done well and suited our previous experience level with motorhomes. Staff were friendly and prompt. Minor issues with the toilet cassette leaking and a bucket with a hole in it, otherwise a most enjoyable experience. Grey water hose could be a little longer.

The campervan was well stocked and performed as per expected

First time doing motorhome road trip. It's a great experience and fun.

It took over four hours to pick up the motorhome. There were problems with the sensors, and then a problem with the engine light. They changed motorhomes, which took time, and there were differences in the buttons and other features compared to the previous one, which they refused to explain, only giving us a leaflet. This gave a terrible impression of customer service. On top of that, they were indignant that we had informed them about the problems with the sensors and the engine itself, especially since it was our first time renting a motorhome. We barely complained, and they were rude. Later, we had problems during the drive, but the roadside assistance was very attentive and willing to help.

The handle on the gas spike didn’t work and I called in to the 24/7 hotline but the customer service officer wasn’t very understanding and seem to be quite impatient about my issue and told me to just wait next morning to call in again when the usual working hours opens at 8am.

This is our first time patronizing them , overall vehicle condition was mediocre, there were pre existing issues with the vehicle outer conditions , which it’s prone to easily damage and it’s vulnerable to fail , which you will hold full liability, even if you damaged it , you would have to pay for the full price . We saw dishonesty as the last damage from the last customer was not even repaired , believed payment had been made by the last customer . We paid for some damages and requested that we have the proof of photo evidence to show that they have really replaced the damaged part , but the staff mentioned that this is the first time they received such request! I have to know what I am paying for ! Either they will leave the damage as it is , or simply lazy ! The hotline is always not available when we want to seek assistance. Luckily , we didn’t breakdown on the road . Would appreciate if the staff could just have the courtesy to say a simple thank you to their customer but we did not even experience it from the staff that served our check out .

The staff were very nice and helpful. Our van worked great. It was clean and made for the perfect travel option for us.
